Sarah's Story: More Than a Kit

There are moments in a young girl’s life that shape her future.

For 12-year-old Sarah from rural Uganda, one of those moments happened in a classroom surrounded by laughter, conversation, and a room full of girls who suddenly realized they were not alone.

For years, Sarah carried questions she did not know how to ask. Like many girls, conversations around menstruation were often surrounded by silence and embarrassment. Missing school during her cycle felt normal. So did the anxiety that came with it.

“I used to worry,” Sarah shared quietly. “Sometimes I did not want to go to school because I felt ashamed.”

For many girls across Uganda, periods do not just affect health. They affect confidence, education, and opportunity. Missing even a few days of school each month can slowly create learning gaps that become difficult to overcome.

Through Wells of Life’s Menstrual Hygiene Program, Sarah’s school participated in a day focused on education, dignity, and practical support. Girls learned about menstrual health, hygiene, and self-care. They received reusable menstrual kits and participated in open conversations designed to replace fear with confidence.

The program also invited boys into the conversation, helping reduce stigma and build understanding among classmates.

Something changed for Sarah that day.

Not simply because she received a kit, but because she felt seen. Today, Sarah attends school with greater confidence and feels empowered to focus on her future instead of fear.

Programs like these do more than provide supplies. They create spaces where girls can learn, ask questions, and walk forward with dignity.

Because every girl deserves the opportunity to stay in school, pursue her dreams, and know there is nothing about her story that should hold her back.

And because of supporters like you, that future is becoming possible for girls like Sarah every day.
